  • Background

The evaluation and analysis of sustainable value chains requires the application of interdisciplinary research approaches. These approaches combine economic, ecological, technical and scientific, legal and social aspects. As a result, value chains can be analyzed in their breadth and depth on a system-wide and process-specific basis.

    Contents of the work

Germany is aiming for climate neutrality by 2045. The transport and chemical sectors in particular are currently heavily dependent on refinery products. To meet the demand for renewable energy in demanding sectors such as shipping and aviation, the supply of renewable fuels must be significantly increased. A successful transition will require a multi-faceted approach, including sustainable transport, electric vehicles and various renewable fuel sources. These fuels are produced using different technologies and feedstocks, which can also generate significant amounts of by-products. For a market-ready green refinery, technical, economic and environmental factors must be considered. The following points are required in the master's thesis:

    • Interconnection of the processes in Simulink as a "superstructure“

    • Optimization of the refinery flowsheet (e.g. minimizing the use of feedstock) with MATLAB and Simulink.

    • Results should provide information on optimal process design and flowsheet configuration.

Details Master's thesis

Requirements

This thesis is aimed at students of industrial, environmental and chemical engineering, mechanical engineering and similar degree programmes. A systematic and result-orientated way of working is a basic requirement for the assignment of the thesis. An interest in process simulation and optimisation is an advantage. The thesis is particularly suitable for determined and systematic students, ideally with previous knowledge of programming in MATLAB and Simulink. The application must be accompanied by a current transcript of records, a CV and a short letter of motivation (approx. half a DIN A4 page).
